Becca looked through the items on the wheeled cart while Kendric squared everything with the minder. She was listening, and she’d telepath any questions she had to Kendric for him to ask if she had any, but so far, Kendric had asked everything she could think of that they might need to know.

The minder was a tall Chinese werewolf named Khan, and Becca could tell that he and Soul had played together by the way their energies mixed. She’d expected Khan to stand outside the door, but there was a little closet-sized room inside the dungeon with a one-way mirror, built especially for him to watch and be able to get to Soul quickly if there was a problem.

Soul was in the center of the room, suspended under the winch, with a spreader bar between her wrists and another between her ankles. She was on tiptoe, and her leg muscles stood out in sharp relief. She’d danced in heels all night, so her calves and toes were probably hurting before they even started. Or maybe not. She was probably used to it.

Becca stood ten feet away and turned her right hand into the lion’s paw, but with super-long claws. The room instantly smelled of fear and a large adrenaline dump, and Becca smiled. “I won’t come near you with these, but I wanted to see your reaction.” She took a deep breath, making a point of scenting the air. She did it again with her mouth open a little. “You smell afraid. It makes me want to scare you more.”

It took a few seconds of control to pull the claws in and turn the paw back into a hand, but Becca was pretty sure she managed to make it look seamless. She held both hands up and finger-waved at Soul before she stalked closer to her and wrapped her fingers around the top front of the other woman’s throat. “Breath play wasn’t on your no-no list.”

Soul’s adrenaline level spiked again, and her fear had a different flavor. Becca felt her scary smile form — the snake-shifter liked having her air cut off.

Kahn came out of his little room, stepped to a cabinet, took something out, and walked to them with it. He put a clear plastic bag over Soul’s head and pulled it back, so it formed against her face.

“Safer than fingers on the throat, and more efficient. She can last longer than you think, without air. I have a button for a bell and a buzzer. The bell means she’s at her limit and you should let her breathe, but then you can play some more. The buzzer means there’s a serious problem and everything comes to a stop.” He turned and walked away from them without waiting for an acknowledgement or response. Soul blew air out, trying to move the bag enough so she could breathe in without sucking the plastic back against her face.

“Kendric,” Becca said while watching Soul struggle to breathe around the mostly-loose bag. “Would you like to keep our playtoy occupied down below while I play up above?”

“Gladly.
